Page 14

I’m a lot happier with this page than the previous one. I’ve been “off my game” as the announcers announce it, and couldn’t produce a single piece of art that I actually liked. The entire last page was me slogging through the panels, and it shows. Today’s page came much easier, and I’m more pleased with it.

HOWEVER. That’s not what’s important. I have a review for you, a novel review. Quick back story: I am a fan of Michael Crichton, and have been for quite some time. When he died, I was sad, but at the same time, the man had a great run, and put out some very quality books, movies, and a successful tv show. And then, I guess he went and wrote a book from the grave. About pirates. How fitting.

It’s called Pirate Latitudes. I’m going to keep this “review” short and sweet, shorter than the entire explanation above:

Charles Hunter is a pirate privateer in Port Royale who decides to attack a spanish stronghold and steal a treasure ship loaded with gold. He gathers his team of “invincible syndrome” heroes and sets out. It flows like a movie, with all the proper motions and action, and is enjoyable. However, in the end, I don’t think he was actually finished the book before he died – it feels like he was going to add quite a bit more small details, flesh it out, make it real. I’d still recommend it if you’re into pirates and reading and things.

Alas, matey, I am now without a novel. I require something to read, to soothe the brain. Any suggestions, knowing I enjoy adventures on the high seas, fantasy, and science fiction?

  1. I appear to be reading this comic. Provisionally, mind you. I am quite interested to see where this stuff is going.

As a suggestion for what to read: Robert Rankin’s Brightonomicon was recently dramatised in BBC 7. It seems pretty cool. There’s a wizard, an amnesiac acolyte named Rizla, pirates, an ark, Atlantis, the last descendent of Jesus Christ, freemasons, time travel, Vatican plots, spaniels and lots of Taxi drivers. It’s ridiculous, but strangely compelling.

  2. That sounds like something I can get onboard with. British humor just gets me. Add in some fantasy and ridiculously grand adventures and I’m sold.

  3. Alas, I’ll also be following this comic. Somethin’ about it sucked me in, and as soon as I find out what, I’m not going to do a damn thing about it. Mind you, the last 3 books are a bit of a trip, miss Douglass does seem to like playing with certain mythology there. *evil grin*

  4. Whoopsie, keyboard malfunction and forgot the book title!

The Wayfarer Redemption by Sara Douglass. ^_^

  5. Thanks for the suggestion! I’m going to pick up the first in that series along with Brightonomicon on Saturday. It’s customer appreciation day at my bookstore, so I’m expecting cake and a personalized song and dance, tailored specifically to me.

I am a terrible shopper of books on my own, I will honestly stand and stare at the shelf for half an hour, and then decide on nothing and just leave. But if someone recommends a book to me, I have no problem buying it on a whim and usually enjoy it. I need a book shopping buddy or something, someone who just grabs books off the shelves and throws them at me!

  6. Woo! My recommendation has affected someone on the other end of the world. That’s makes me feel kind of drunk with power. I hope you enjoy it.
